Resources to Use to Find Out if Someone is in Jail
Finding out if a loved one is arrested or in jail may seem like a complicated and overwhelming task, but there are resources available to help you easily find the answer.
In order to do this, you will first need to gather information on the person you are looking for.
Pinpoint Your Search
When it comes to narrowing your search, you need to identify the following characteristics of the induvial:
- Full Name
Next, figure out if the person is more likely to be in jail or prison. A good rule of thumb: if the individual is likely serving more than one year
Finally, think about which jail would be the most likely one where they’d be held. If you’re looking for someone who was recently arrested, then try and figure out which county they were arrested in, as they would most likely be held at that county jail.
If you believe they were arrested a while ago, then they may be at the county jail in the county of which they reside. Sometimes, they may be at a nearby county jail if the jail they should be at is full.
Resources to Use
As with most times when you need an answer, you need to look no further than Google! Google Should be the initial place you start at, as a simple search query for the potential counties you’ve identified can help lead you to find the jailed person.
County Jail Websites
Once you’ve found the websites for these jails, you can search their online database by entering the information you have on the individual to see if anything comes up. Most of the time, you won’t need
If the county jail website doesn’t have a database you can search, simply call the number provided on their site and ask if you can confirm if someone is held in their faclity.
Even if you do find the person you’re looking for in the database, you should still call the county directly to confirm that they are still there and haven’t been transferred recently.
Victim Information and Notification Everyday
Not only does the Victim Information and Notification Everyday resource allow you to search for potentially incarcerated individuals by state, but they will also send you emails, texts, or phone calls if you want to be updated when the person’s custody status chnges.
The resource is originally intended to help victims of crimes keep tabs on offenders, but works well for finding out if someone you know is in jail.
Federal Bureau of Prisons’ Website
If you think there is a chance that the individual you are trying to locate is in a federal jail instead of a county jail, then check out the Federal Bureau of Prisons’ website.
The reason for someone being in a federal jail rather than a county one would be if they had committed a federal offense. To use the Federal Bureau of Prisons database, you’ll need to know the first and last name of the individual, and you’ll need to spell them correctly.
